STREET ACADEMY SPONSORED WALK 2010

"Education is a right not a privilege: Less Talk; More Action."

Following the great success of last year's event, on July 17th, 2010 Street Academy will hold yet another Walk through the principal streets of Accra in order to simultaneously raise awareness to the cause of Streetism in Accra. We would like to invite you to join us in fighting for the children's right by donating to this event. With your support, we can ensure that this year's Walk on Streetism will be a great success and together we can raise awareness and support for the Street Academy's work with some of the Ghana's most disadvantaged children. Thank you

THE SITUATION OF STREET CHILDREN IN ACCRA

There are an estimated 50,000 street children in Accra. These children are missing out on their fundamental right to education, play, nutritious food and protection from harm and abuse. These children are among the poorest in Accra. Because of poverty, most children do not have enough to eat, or what they do have is not enough to enable them to grow up strong and healthy. Poverty forces many children to work to earn money for their families, for example being a porter or a sweeper at the market, exposing them to threat of exploitation and abuse. Work also stops children from having time to play which is vital in enabling them to enjoy their childhood and develop valuable life-skills such as communication and team work. The greatest tragedy for many of these children is that poverty is denying them their right to education. While primary and junior high school is free in Ghana, these children still cannot access school because they cannot afford the shoes, equipment, social wears and others school materials they need. Without education, these children have little hope of breaking the poverty and securing a brighter future for themselves.

THE EVENT

Every year since 2004, we have organized a sponsored Walk through the principal streets of Accra that allows the children and other sympathizers to create the needed Awareness of the plight of the street children in Accra. This event demonstrates that, having a good education and exhibiting proper life skills can result in and consequently provides hope for the children as it gives them something to strive toward. The event enables Street Academy to continue our work in educating some of the most vulnerable children in Accra and helping them to look forward to a bright and a prosperous future.

In 2009, the sponsored walk was hugely attended by over 100 children and some 100 sympathizers through the streets of Accra and crowned at the Holy Gardens, Kwame Nkrumah Circle. The children wore specially designed T-shirts from Zenith Bank & Plan Ghana and were involved in special games and activities.

This year, we are delighted to be having our Annual sponsored Walk once again to enable us create the much needed awareness about the plights of the most vulnerable children in Accra on 17th July, 2010 and we will be expecting about 200 guests and over 150 children to attend the event.

THE STREET ACADEMY ANNUAL DINNER DANCE GALA 2010

"THE HOPE AND FUTURE OF A STREET CHILD."

Venue: Golden Tulip Hotel.   Date: 11th December 2010.

Drawing aspirations from the success of last year’s dinner, the Street Academy will hold a fundraiser dinner dance on the 11th December, 2010 at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra to simultaneously raise awareness on the causes and predicaments of street children while providing our children a moment of fun and excitement where they could meet and interact with their hero(ines) and role models to help them grow to become what they aspire to be in this world, which they have a role to play. We would like to invite you to join us in fighting this cause by donating to this event. With your support, we can assure you that this year's dinner dance will be a great success and together we can raise awareness and support The Street Academy's work.

THE EVENT

Every year since 1998, we have organized a dinner and dance fundraising event that allows the children to mingle and interact with role models within the greater community. It is extremely exciting for the children as they are provided with a rare opportunity that they otherwise would not have experienced had they remained on the streets. This event demonstrates what having a good education and exhibiting proper life skills can result in and consequently provides hope for the children as it gives them something to strive toward. The event enables The Street Academy to continue our work in educating some of the most vulnerable children in Accra and helping them to look forward to a bright and prosperous future.

In 2009, the event was largely successful as we had in our midst the former mayor of Accra , the first female naval Lt. commander, the board of trustees, children from the Alsyd Academy and a number of prestigious officials to interact with over a hundred wonderful street children. The children wore specially designed t-shirts. They staged incredible performances in drama, cultural dance and sang carols as well.

This year, we are very much delighted to be having our annual dinner dance gala to again stimulate hopes and aspirations in our dear children or siblings. The venue for this year’s dinner would be The Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra on Saturday 11th December, 2010 on the theme:The hope and future of a street child.”
